Will Your Bed Fit Through the Door? The Measure-First Checklist for Tower Deliveries

Picture this: your new bed frame arrives on schedule, the delivery team unloads it from the truck, and then they stand at your front door realizing the headboard is four centimetres too wide to pass through. It happens more often than you’d think, especially in high-rise apartments across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, where service lifts, tight hallway turns, and narrow apartment doors can turn an exciting delivery day into a frustrating one. The good news is that will a bed fit through a door is a question you can usually answer before ordering with just a few minutes of careful measuring.

The Three Measurements That Actually Decide If Your Bed Fits

Most people only check the doorway width and assume that’s enough. It isn’t. Three numbers together determine whether a bed frame will actually make it into your bedroom.

First, there’s the doorway width and height. Measure the narrowest point of the opening, not just the frame, since hinges, handles and door stoppers can reduce the usable space by a few centimetres. When checking bed frame dimensions for doorways, remember that the packaged or individual panel dimensions can matter more than the dimensions of the fully assembled bed.

Second is the diagonal clearance. Movers rarely carry a large bed panel straight through a door. Instead, they tilt or angle it to get through the opening. Therefore, the diagonal measurement of the headboard or largest panel can be just as important as its width.

Third is the hallway and turning space leading to the bedroom. A bed frame that clears the front door can still get stuck at a sharp corridor turn if there isn’t enough room to pivot it.

If you’re ordering a king or super king bed, check the product page for the flat-pack or individual panel dimensions rather than relying only on the assembled bed size. This is particularly important when how to measure doorways for furniture becomes part of your delivery planning.

Before ordering, asking will a bed fit through a door can help you identify potential access problems while you still have time to choose a different frame or delivery option. If you’re unsure how to measure doorways for furniture, remember to measure the narrowest usable points along the entire delivery route, not just the main entrance.

Why Tower Apartments in the UAE Make This Trickier

Villa deliveries are often more straightforward because wide entrances and open layouts provide greater flexibility. Tower living can be different. Many residential buildings across Dubai and Abu Dhabi route furniture deliveries through a service lift rather than the main passenger lift.

Service lifts can be noticeably smaller than passenger lifts. They may also have lower height clearance, particularly when a large item is wrapped or protected with additional packaging.

Some buildings also require prior approval or a booked delivery slot with building management before movers can bring furniture through the service entrance. Therefore, measuring your apartment alone may not be enough.

When checking bed frame dimensions for doorways, also consider the route from the loading area to your apartment. The furniture may need to pass through a basement entrance, service corridor, lift and apartment hallway before it reaches the bedroom. For apartment residents, knowing will a bed fit through a door is only part of the calculation. The service lift, hallway width and turning space can all affect whether the delivery team can reach the bedroom.

It’s also worth checking your apartment’s internal layout. Studio and one-bedroom units in newer developments sometimes have bedroom doors positioned at an angle to a narrow hallway. This can reduce the effective turning space even when the door itself has a standard width.

A quick call to your building’s management office can confirm service lift dimensions, loading access and delivery rules. That small step can save a genuinely stressful afternoon.

How to Measure Your Doorway, Hallway and Lift Before You Order

A few minutes with a tape measure is all this takes. If you’re wondering how to measure doorways for furniture, focus on the actual route the largest bed component will travel rather than measuring only the bedroom door.

1. Measure Your Entrance Door

Measure the usable width and height of your entrance door at the narrowest point. If possible, measure with the door fully open because the frame, hinges or door hardware can affect the available clearance.

2. Measure the Bedroom Door

The bedroom door is just as important as the main entrance. In many apartments, the bedroom doorway is narrower than the front entrance.

3. Check the Hallway

Measure the narrowest hallway section between the entrance and bedroom. Then consider whether the delivery team will have enough space to rotate the headboard or other large panel.

4. Measure the Service Lift

If you live in a tower, ask building management for the service lift’s internal width, height and depth. Also ask about the maximum permitted load if you’re ordering a particularly large or heavy bed.

5. Check the Product Dimensions

Compare your measurements with the dimensions listed on the product page. For bed frame dimensions for doorways, the most useful figures are usually the dimensions of the largest individual component or packaged item.

6. Ask About Assembly

If your home has particularly tight access, ask whether the bed can be delivered in disassembled panels and assembled inside the apartment. This can significantly reduce the access problem because smaller components are easier to move through narrow spaces.

Keeping a simple note of these measurements before you buy means you’re choosing a bed frame that actually works for your home, rather than one that only looks good online.

Don’t Forget the Bed Packaging

One detail that’s easy to overlook is the packaging. A bed frame may technically fit through a doorway once unpacked, but the packaged box or protective wrapping could make the delivery more difficult.

Before ordering, ask about the dimensions of the largest packaged component. This is especially useful for upholstered headboards, storage beds and large king or super king frames.

In some cases, the delivery team may be able to remove external packaging before navigating a particularly tight section. However, this should be confirmed with the retailer or delivery team in advance rather than assumed on delivery day.

What About King and Super King Beds?

A larger mattress doesn’t necessarily mean the entire bed frame will be difficult to deliver. Most modern bed frames are designed to be assembled from multiple components.

The headboard is often the piece that deserves the most attention because it can be both wide and tall. Storage beds can also have larger side panels, bases or mechanisms that require additional clearance.

Therefore, don’t judge access based solely on the mattress size. A 180x200cm mattress, for example, doesn’t mean a 180cm-wide piece has to pass through your doorway.

Instead, check the dimensions of each major component and identify which one is the largest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do bed frames usually arrive pre-assembled or disassembled?

Most bed frames, especially larger sizes, are delivered disassembled in multiple panels and assembled on-site. This is one of the main reasons access problems can usually be avoided. Check the product’s packaged and individual component dimensions rather than looking only at the finished size.

What happens if my bed doesn’t fit through the door?

The delivery team may look for an alternative entry point or determine whether the frame can be brought inside as separate components. However, options depend on the product, building and delivery conditions. Checking will a bed fit through a door before placing the order is therefore much easier than trying to solve the problem after delivery.

Do UAE tower buildings require special permission for furniture delivery?

Many residential buildings have their own delivery procedures. Some require advance booking, security approval or use of a service lift. Contact your building management team before the delivery date to confirm the requirements.

What’s a safe minimum doorway width for a queen or king bed frame?

There isn’t one universal minimum because bed frame designs and component dimensions vary. A doorway of around 75–80cm may accommodate many individual bed components, but diagonal clearance, panel height and hallway space also matter. Always compare the actual product dimensions with your route.

A Simple Pre-Delivery Checklist

If you’re asking will a bed fit through a door before placing your order, checking every stage of the delivery route is the safest approach.

Before ordering a new bed frame, keep this checklist handy:

• Measure the main entrance.
• Measure the apartment or bedroom door.
• Check hallway width.
• Measure tight corners and turning points.
• Confirm service lift dimensions.
• Check the largest packaged component.
• Check individual panel dimensions.
• Ask whether the frame is delivered disassembled.
• Confirm building delivery requirements.
• Ask about in-home assembly.

If you are still unsure how to measure doorways for furniture, start with the largest component listed on the product page and work backwards through every part of the delivery route.

Finding the Right Bed for Your Space

Getting the measurements right takes a little patience, but it’s far less effort than dealing with a failed delivery. The key is to think about the complete journey from the delivery truck to the bedroom, rather than checking just one doorway.
