How to Choose a Console Table: Height, Depth and Where It Works (Behind the Sofa, Entryway, Hallway)
You find a console you love, it arrives, and the front door clips its corner every time it opens. Or it sits behind the sofa like a fence. Console tables are slim, so they look easy to buy. In practice they fail on a few centimetres, and those centimetres are all in the height, the depth and the walking space left around it.
The three measurements that decide everything
Height. Most console tables sit between 75 and 90 cm. Measure your own sofa back or window sill rather than trusting a standard. Behind a sofa, aim for level with the sofa back or slightly below it, so the console looks like part of the seating zone. In an entryway, 75 to 85 cm is comfortable for dropping keys, placing a lamp or hanging a mirror above.
Depth. This is where most mistakes happen. Roughly 25 to 40 cm covers the range:
- 30 to 40 cm behind a sofa, enough for a lamp and a tray without crowding.
- 25 to 35 cm in an entryway.
- 20 to 25 cm in a hallway, where every centimetre comes out of your walking space.
Length. Behind a sofa, a console about two-thirds of the sofa’s width usually looks balanced. Never go longer than the sofa. On a wall, leave a visible gap at each end rather than running the console wall to wall, so it reads as a deliberate piece.
Where it works, and what to check
Behind the sofa. In open-plan Dubai apartments, where the living and dining areas share one room, a console behind the sofa marks the boundary between zones and gives you a place for lamps, books and a plant. Leave a few centimetres between sofa and console so the sofa can move and nobody scrapes their knuckles on the table. Then walk around the back of the sofa once. If you can’t pass comfortably, the console is too deep or the sofa is too close.
Entryway. Many apartments have no real foyer, just a stretch of wall near the door. A console here becomes the drop zone. Open shelves or drawers hide the clutter, and a lower shelf holds baskets or shoes. If shoes are your main problem, pair it with a shoe rack rather than asking the console to do both jobs. Check the door swing first, and measure from the open door to the console’s front edge.
Hallway. Treat it as a walkway first and a display surface second. A common guideline is to keep roughly 90 cm clear, so a deeper console only works in a wide hallway. In a narrow villa corridor or an older apartment passage, go for 20 to 25 cm depth and rounded corners.
| Location | Height | Depth | Clear space to keep | Works best with |
| Behind the sofa | At or just below the sofa back | 30–40 cm | A walkable gap around the sofa | Lamps, trays, plants |
| Entryway | 75–85 cm | 25–35 cm | Full door swing plus room to step in | Drawers, baskets, mirror above |
| Hallway | 75–85 cm | 20–25 cm | About 90 cm of walkway | Slim top, rounded edges |
What to avoid
- Measuring the wall but not the route. Tower lifts and narrow doorways stop more deliveries than room size does. Our guide on measuring the doorway, the lift and the turn is worth reading before you order.
- Buying for looks only. A console that holds nothing gets cluttered fast. Decide whether you need drawers, shelves or just a display top.
- Ignoring the finish. Entryway consoles take knocks from bags and keys, so a durable finish matters more than a delicate one. In air-conditioned homes, check how the material handles the move between indoor cold and the humid air at the door.
- Matching the coffee table by default. The two don’t need to match. They should share a tone or material so the room feels connected. If you’re sizing that piece too, see what size coffee table you need.
FAQs
What height should a console table be?
Between 75 and 90 cm suits most homes. Behind a sofa, match or sit slightly below the sofa back. In an entryway, 75 to 85 cm is practical for everyday use.
How deep should a console table be behind a sofa?
About 30 to 40 cm works for most living rooms. Go slimmer if the sofa sits close to the wall or the room is tight.
Can I use a console table in a narrow hallway?
Yes, if it’s about 20 to 25 cm deep and you still have roughly 90 cm of clear walkway. If you don’t, choose a wall-mounted shelf instead.
What’s the difference between a console table and a sideboard?
A console is slim and mainly for display and light storage. A sideboard is deeper and lower, built for dining or living room storage.
