How Often Should You Replace a Mattress? Signs It Is Time and What to Try First
Most mattresses are worth replacing somewhere between 7 and 10 years, but that is a guide, not a deadline. Build quality, how much weight the bed carries, how it is supported and whether it has been protected all change the answer. Your own sleep is a better measure than the calendar.
Signs it is time
- Visible sagging or a body-shaped dip. If you can see or feel a hollow where you sleep, the support layers have worn.
- Waking up stiff or sleeping better elsewhere. If you sleep noticeably better in a hotel or guest bed, the mattress may have lost its support. Stiffness can have other causes, so see a doctor if it persists.
- Noise and poking. Creaking, or coils you can feel, usually points to a worn spring unit.
- Lumps, uneven surface or foam that no longer rebounds. Foam that stays compressed after you get up has broken down.
- Rolling toward the middle or feeling your partner’s every move. Edge and motion support have weakened.
- Allergies or odours that do not go away after cleaning. Over time, mattresses collect dust, sweat and skin cells.
- Age. If it is past 8 to 10 years and any of the above apply, replacement is likely the better move.
What to try first
Replacement is not always the first step. Depending on the problem, these are worth a go:
- Rotate it. Turn a mattress head to foot every few months so wear spreads out. Many modern mattresses are one-sided and cannot be flipped, so check the care label.
- Check the base. A bed base with broken slats or weak centre support can mimic a worn mattress. Fix or replace the base first.
- Add a topper. A topper can soften a firm mattress or add comfort to one that is slightly worn. It will not fix real sagging, and our post on protectors vs toppers explains what each does.
- Use a protector and keep it clean. It guards against spills and sweat, which shorten a mattress’s life.
- Check the warranty. Some sagging claims are covered within a set period.
If sagging, lumps or lost support remain after these steps, a new mattress will do more than any fix.
How long each type lasts
These are general ranges. Quality, density and use matter more than the type label.
| Type | How it is built | Typical wear signs | Rough lifespan |
| Foam / memory foam | Layers of foam; higher density tends to hold shape longer | Permanent dips, softening, slow rebound | Often 8 to 10 years |
| Pocket spring | Individually wrapped coils with comfort layers on top | Coil noise, edge softening, surface dips | Often 8 to 10 years |
| Bonnell spring | Connected coils; firmer, simpler support | Sagging, squeaks, coil pressure | Often 6 to 8 years |
| Hybrid | Springs combined with foam layers | Either foam or spring signs | Often 8 to 10 years |
You may also see “medicated” or “orthopedic” on labels. Those describe a firmness or marketing claim and not a separate build type, so check the core construction and foam density instead. For full comparisons, see memory foam vs spring mattresses and mattress firmness explained.
Choosing the next one

Frequently asked questions
How often should you replace a mattress?
Generally every 7 to 10 years, sooner if it sags, becomes uncomfortable or no longer supports you well.
How long does a memory foam mattress last?
Often around 8 to 10 years, and denser foam tends to last longer. Look for permanent dips or slow recovery as signs of wear.
Do spring mattresses wear out faster than foam?
Not always. Bonnell spring units tend to wear sooner, while pocket spring and good-quality foam often last similarly. Build quality matters most.
Can a mattress topper make an old mattress last longer?
It can improve comfort on a slightly worn mattress, but it cannot fix a sagging or collapsed one.
